Description:  Many bedrock sites are typically under-characterized or unprepared for injection operations due to the paucity of data available to model and evaluate the transport and storative regimes in consolidated material. In this technical presentation, Derek Pizarro, Senior Product Manager at AST Environmental, Inc. (Freehold, NJ), will describe how to characterize fractured bedrock at environmental sites using both conventional and modern investigative techniques. The fundamentals and tools discussed will allow environmental practitioners to understand a sequence of processes to determine quantitatively where groundwater and bedrock mass is located, how to access it, and design for precise and successful injectate emplacement.

Deployment of reusable borehole characterization and injection points (BCIPs), which can be sequenced to optimize their placement, maximize the effectiveness of both characterization and treatment programs while eliminating excess drilling. Borehole geophysical tools and techniques will be discussed and how this data connects with discrete groundwater samples collected using narrow-interval straddle packers, and rock matrix samples collected during the drilling process, to refine the Conceptual Site Model (CSM). Ultimately, this approach generates a targeted design that addresses fracture, feature, and/or zone-specific injections with stoichiometrically-calculated injectate loadings.
