Course Description:

This presentation will discuss the interim remediation standards for per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in soil for the migration to groundwater pathway (SRS-MGW). The New Jersey approach to regulating PFAS in soil for the protection of groundwater will be compared to that taken by other regulatory jurisdictions. Retention and leaching of PFAS in soil are affected by several factors, including release characteristics, unique sorption mechanisms (e.g., interfacial sorption), soil characteristics, and a cyclic process of desorption, leaching, and resorption. The basis for the SRS-MGW will be compared to the recent body of knowledge relating to PFAS sequestration in soil. Case examples will be provided of soil sequestration and leaching along with a demonstration of the NJDEP PFAS SPLP calculator. The roundtable will culminate with a novel attainment demonstration approach for sequestering PFAS with sorptive amendments, including 1) an overview of commercially available and emerging amendments; 2) means, methods, and considerations for field application; and 3) sustainability considerations.
