NJDEP - Site Remediation

Course Description:

“Green and Sustainable Remediation (GSR) is the practice of considering all environmental effects of remedy implementation and incorporating options to maximize net environmental benefit of cleanup actions.” (USEPA). GSR also involves remedy impacts in the context of environmental justice and resilience (ITRC).

With the passage of the SRRA amendment, GSR has emerged as a beneficial approach that optimizes all phases of site remediation, from site investigation to project closeout. LSRPs will benefit from learning about these tools which are used to measure the environmental footprint of remedial alternatives in terms of sustainability metrics during remediation.

The NJDEP's John Doyon, a course instructor, is the Team Leader of the ITRC Sustainable and Resilient Remediation Guidance Committee.  ITRC is working on a new update to their 2011 Guidance that looks to expand its emphasis on social and economic factors including environmental justice, as well as the resilience of the remedy to the effects of the elements, including climate change.

The Program reviews useful quantitative Green and Sustainable Remediation (GSR) tools and their use. Attendees will gain an understanding of the tools available to them; some of which have been only informally communicated to the regulated community by the NJDEP, including:
  • Drivers for GSR
  • SEFA spreadsheets from USEPA, and the SiteWise tool from the US Army Corps of Engineers, Naval Facilities Engineering Command and Battelle
  • The required inputs and guidelines for understanding outputs
  • How to use these GRS tools for remediation optimization by identifying components of ongoing remedial actions that can be altered to minimize or reduce emissions and resource usage while maintaining protectiveness
  • NJ Case studies employing GSR
This course will help improve sustainability of cleanup activities and improve attendees knowledge and understanding of the potential benefits of incorporating Green and Sustainable Remediation (GSR) into their projects within existing regulatory frameworks.

North American Aggregates, LLC, (NAA) a wholly owned subsidiary of Weeks Marine, Inc.,  mines sand from the Ambrose Federal Navigation Channel, a naturally replenishing source in the lower New York Bay.

Testing of our sand has consistently met the most restrictive regulatory standards in New Jersey;  allowing our material to be used as clean fill on Site Remediation Projects across the State.  We also work with clients to design sampling programs of our raw material to satisfy their project needs.

Our logistics team works with our clients to coordinate delivery by land and water. Additionally, we can provide unloading services and mobile processing equipment for a seamless loadout at any site.  https://www.northamericanaggregates.com/our-process.

EOS Remediation, LLC (EOS) is an international leader in the development of in situ bioremediation technologies to restore contaminated soil and groundwater.  EOS was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina. We manufacture a suite of products for treatment of hazardous pollutants including chlorinated solvents, heavy metals, petroleum, explosives and propellants, and mine waste. We are woman-owned small business that combines award-winning, patented, and proven products with superior technical assistance.  Our products have been used successfully in New Jersey as well as around the United States and the world.

The field success of enhanced in situ remediation using our engineered formulations has been documented in countless papers and published in numerous scientific journals, making our emulsified vegetable oil products the most tested and accredited option available.  From leading the industry in the application of emulsified vegetable oil for bioremediation, to developing a long-lasting buffer for adjustment of pH in acidic aquifers to optimize biodegradation and immobilize some dissolved metals, we thrive on constant innovation.  For more information, please call us at 919.873.2204.
